Epson 9 pins / 24 pins

Post by PaulY »

Hi I'm using the RetroPrinter on a ZX Spectrum, Atari STe and Windows 95/2000 Pentium 2. Since the Spectrum is my nostalgic machine, I started using the RP 9 pin config setting. To use drivers for 24 Pin printers on my Pentium 2, I changed the RP settings back to the default 24 pins. I then noticed my Spectrum centronics interface still works on the 24 pin setting. The simple print outs I have done so far with the Spectrum using the 24 pin setting seem the same as the ones produced with the 9 pin setting. The few control codes I have set up so far for Enlarged and Condensed fonts print out fine. Is there something that might not work properly, if I use the 24 pin setting with my Spectrum interface all the time?

The only difference between the 9 pin and 24 pin setting is actually the line spacing - one is in 1/72" increments, the other in 1/60" increments, so it depends on the types of printout as to whether it makes a difference.

Other than that, the control codes are backwardly compatible - just the 24 pin printers support more codes (ESC/P2) rather than the original ESC/P format supported on the 9 pin printers.
