Back Up SD Card

Post by PaulY »

Hi, Sorry for this simplistic question, but what is the best way to back up the Retro Printer SD Card. For example can you just copy the SD Card files into a Windows Folder on your PC and then copy them back onto another SD Card like you can with a Spectrum Next. The reason I ask is that I'm not clear in general when you need to create a bootable image, or when just copying files from a functioning SD Card on to another freshly formatted SD Card is sufficient?

The problem is that Windows cannot understand the Linux filesystem, so you cannot simply copy the files over on Windows.

The best option is to use something like the HDD raw copy tool to make a direct image of the SD card.

The latest software is always available for download (as an SD card image), so you can also just use Bitvise SSH to backup the contents of /root/config (and possibly /home/pi/data) onto your PC. Burn the latest software image and then use Bitvise SSH to copy those files back to the new SD card.
