EPSON ESC t - Character Tables

Post by RWAP »

At the moment, the Retro-Printer software only supports a standard courier font.

However, the Epson ESC/P2 control set contains various international character tables which allow for a wider range of characters as used by various languages. These tables can also have some specific characters over-written by the ESC R command.

I have now started creating some bitmap fonts to echo those built into the printer, but would appreciate someone comparing the font output on their printer, with the fonts I am designing (as there does not seem anywhere which has 8 bit EPSON fonts, or even true type fonts which echo those built into Epson printers).

I use the program Fony to create the fonts based on an 8x16 grid and then they can be exported them as a bitmap font in order to be used with the Retro-Printer module software.

I started with the standard Epson and US (PC437) fonts which are mainly based on the existing SIEMENS.C16 font we have been using to date. I will add more fonts to this first post as they are created / amended

I am still improving these three font sets to get the size and layout closer to at least the SIEMENS.C16 font which is the one we have been using to date.

Once complete, I will then be able to create the other Epson fonts as per the ESC/P2 programming reference manual and the Retro-Printer software can then be updated to handle the control codes for switching between the fonts. At least we will then have a suite of fonts in a format which can be easily edited if any inconsistencies with the original Epson fonts come to light.

It would be so much easier if Epson actually had their own built-in fonts in a suitable format (well any format would do!!)

UDGs will then follow.
