Can't access Retroprinter on my network after router change

Post by PaulY »

Hi. I just had my broadband upgraded to fibre and have new router. So I now need to update my Wi=Fi settings on the RetroPrinter with new SSID and password. At first I tried accessing the RetroPrinter via my PC browser using the IP address, but when this failed, it occurred to me that I can't communicate with the RetroPrinter now because it is set with my old Wi-Fi settings, which I need to update to reflect my new SSID and Password.

I overlooked this forgetting Rich kindly set up my previous Wi-Fi information on the RetroPrinter when I bought it. I assume that I will now need to use a direct Ethernet cable from a PC to the RetroPrinter to update the Wi-Fi settings and that once I do this, everything else will remain the same - i.e. the SSH Client logon and the saved network shortcut on my PC to the PDF, ECS, and RAW files on the RetroPrinter. Are my thoughts correct?

If you have any further guidance to give that you think would help me get set up again, I would appreciate it.

Thanks Paul

Hi Paul,

You will indeedd need to use an eternet cable either from your PC or from your router to initially talk to the Retro-Printer and change the WiFi settings.

Once you connect, use BitVise SSH Client to open a command console window on the Retro-Printer and enter the command:
raspi-config

This will enable you to change the network settings for the new WiFi:

Once connected, you will not need to change anything else.

Hi

You will be delighted to hear I have got everything working. :-) :-)

Using raspi-config is very simple. Even though the console menu I see is different to the one on the Adafruit link, its obvious you need to select system settings, where the wi-fi SSID and passphrase questions are. (Is "passphrase" of Unix origin - rather than password?)

Having got the wi-fi connected, I then, of course needed to get CUPS working again and add my printer. I found the Retro-Printer's ip address from my new router's devices menu, but it took me a couple of goes before I realised I needed to add :631 to the ip address end, in order for my browser to connect to CUPS. I recall this having to add this from the original set up, but don't have any idea why?

(Incidentally I always get a warning about going to the site in my browser, which I go past by "accepting the risk")

Now I have done this for myself, I won't have to ask you again in the future :-)

Thank for your prompt help, as always.

Glad to hear you got it up and running.

CUPS can (normally) be accessed using:

https://retro-printer:631

(it does not always work for some reason).

The security certificate warning is because we do not install a security certificate on the retro-printer (it would only need to be renewed every year anyway).

The ":631" is to tell the browser to access the retro-printer using port 631 - that is the Unix port for the CUPS interface.
